‘THE HOUR’ Scottish Television
Monday October 5th 2009. 5-6pm
Hosts: Steven Jardine Michelle McManus
Guests: Ruth Madoc, Malcolm Robinson, Brian McMullan + others.
Fraser dropped us off at STV studio 3.30pm. He did a great job getting us there in time, thanks Fraser!
After signing in we were shown to the ‘green’ room. Met some other guests and offered tea coffee. During this time the producer and researcher asked if we had any other photos with us. Malcolm explained that he had sent pictures via e-mail within last couple of weeks. She had them ok but seemed to want more. Malcolm had a few copies of the ones he sent plus I had photocopy of a painting of the C E IV sighting of July ’85. She said it was fantastic and was happy with all pictures!
After make-up we went into main studio for a rehearsal 4.25pm. The rehearsal went ok. I was talking about our sighting along with print on screen. The impact of our sighting on screen was tremendous and I found the talk during it was easy and I felt very relaxed, no problem whatsoever.
During Malcolm’s rehearsal he hinted that a movie about the A70 case, the story of Gary and Colin’s abduction, was already in the planning stages. Both hosts picked up on this immediately and saw this news as a scoop for ‘their’ show. I thought nothing of it as I was happy with ‘my bit’ on the show and looked forward to going ‘live’.
At 4.55pm we were led again into main studio, this time it was for real! During Malcolm’s interview the ‘movie scoop’ was now also being discussed and in doing so it was obvious more time was being used up.
During Malcolm’s interview I waited and watched the monitor to see when my picture was coming up and was ready and willing to talk when it did... It never happened! As Malcolm completed a sentence Steven Jardine, suddenly and completely unexpectedly said…
‘BRIAN, LOOK STRAIGHT DOWN THAT CAMERA THERE AND TELL THEM (VIEWERS) ‘WHY SHOULD THEY BELIEVE?’
I think the look on my face tells the whole story. I was totally unprepared for this question as up until a second before I was still watching the monitor for my picture coming up!
I was struggling to get a reply going! Luckily the brain and mouth began to move together; unfortunately it wasn’t the reply I would have given in normal circumstances! Had I been given the opportunity to think, or got the question during rehearsals the reply would have been much more constructive. I do realise just about anything can occur on ‘live’ television but to me personally, that was a whopper!
From the minute we arrived at the studio we were both treated as VIPs. We were soon relaxed by all the staff and a young lady in particular made sure we always had a coffee when we needed one. Meeting Steven and Michelle was a highlight of our visit and meeting and talking to Ruth Madoc was a treat. Such a remarkable lady and she had all the time in the world as she joined in discussions with us before she herself went on the show. We exchanged our stories with other guests making it all an unforgettable light hearted experience.
The emphasis put on the UFO pictures/painting by the researcher and producer had convinced me that this was the road they were going down. There was absolutely no reason to doubt this as the expression on their faces, as well as what they said showed real excitement as they foresaw superb visuals for the show itself! Malcolm and I talking over these visuals would have ensured the viewer got full information on each picture!
Both hosts, Steven and Michelle would have been aware of the last minute changes that were made. This was obvious through the change in the style of their interview.
Obviously there is a time element and it seems to me that at the last minute ‘upstairs’ changed the earlier planned format! Of course the short time each guest is appearing is a factor in any planning and it’s probably my enthusiasm for ufology that wants me to get more in!
I firmly believe that using the extra photos/painting would have made perfect television, especially considering the large screens in most viewers’ homes. The impact would have been tremendous catching immediate attention……and that’s what television is all about!
